North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, accompanied by his daughter, personally oversaw the recent test-firing of the country’s most powerful intercontinental ballistic missile, state media images showed Friday. The launch on Thursday — Pyongyang’s second ICBM test this year — involved a Hwasong-17 missile, the official Korean Central News Agency reported, adding that it was fired in response to “frantic” US-South Korea joint military drills.
Photographs in the official Rodong Sinmun newspaper showed Kim watching the black-and-white Hwasong-17 — dubbed a “monster missile” by analysts — blast off into the sky.
Some of the images showed him watching the launch with his daughter — never named by state media but identified as his second child Ju Ae by South Korean intelligence.
State media also released images showing the Earth from space, purportedly taken by a camera mounted on the ICBM.
KCNA said the launch “confirmed the war readiness of the ICBM unit”, adding that it “had no negative impact on the security” of neighbouring countries.
South Korea had previously said the missile was fired on a lofted trajectory — up instead of out, typically done to avoid overflying neighbouring countries.
Last year, North Korea declared itself an “irreversible” nuclear power, and Kim recently called for an “exponential” increase in weapons production, including tactical nukes.
Overseeing the Thursday launch, Kim said North Korea would “react to nuclear weapons with nukes” and called for “irreversibly bolstering up the nuclear war deterrent”, according to KCNA.
He also highlighted the country’s “rapid response posture… to cope with any armed conflict and war”, KCNA said.
In theory, the Hwasong-17 ICBM can reach the continental United States, and with this latest launch, North Korea is trying to emphasise the advanced level of its weaponry, analysts said.Related News
“With the photos of the Earth, Pyongyang seems to be trying to show that it can accurately hit any target the regime wants with its ICBM,” Cheong Seong-chang, a senior fellow at the Sejong Institute, told AFP.
The next step will likely be North Korea firing the missile “at a normal angle”, he said, which would demonstrate it can survive reentry into the atmosphere.
The Thursday launch — Pyongyang’s third show of force this week — came as Tokyo and Seoul sought to thaw long-frozen ties to counter an increasingly aggressive North Korea.null
South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol flew to Japan Thursday to meet Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, the first such summit in 12 years.
North Korea fired two cruise missiles from a submarine on Sunday, followed by two short-range ballistic missiles on Thursday, as South Korea and the United States staged major military drills.
The allies have ramped up defence cooperation in the face of growing military and nuclear threats from North Korea, which has conducted a series of increasingly provocative banned weapons tests in recent months.
“The fact (that) North Korea has almost normalised ICBM tests over the last year is a concern,” Joseph Dempsey, a researcher at the International Institute for Strategic Studies, told AFP.
Soo Kim, a former CIA Korea analyst, said that Kim’s regime “has essentially desensitised the international community to its weapons tests,” she told AFP.
“We’ve reached a point where an ICBM test draws no greater attention than a short-range missile test,” she said.
“We’ll continue to see North Korea advancing and expanding its suite of weapons capabilities in the days to come.”

The remains of late Senator Joseph Wayas who was President of Nigeria’s Senate in the second Republic (1979-1983) has reportedly been abandoned in a London hospital.
Wayas died in December 2021 at a London hospital, following a lingering illness, which some family members attributed to poverty.
Family sources told Daily Trust that financial help was no longer coming and they on their own could barely cope maintaining the body.
Governor Ben Ayade of Cross River, where the deceased hailed from, had inaugurated an expanded funeral committee in December 2021.
This was after the state government had mandated the then commissioner for health, Dr Betta Edu to oversee his health management in London.
The state government was said to have released some funds to the funeral committee headed by two-time Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Kanu Agabi.
But 14 months after his death, findings show that the body of Nigeria’s former number three citizen had been neglected over funds controversy.
Findings also revealed that there the controversy surrounding the funeral funds led to resignation of key members of the committee.
One of the key members of the funeral committee, former executive secretary of National Planning Commission and one-time governorship hopeful, Ntufam Fidelis Ugbo, confirmed that he had since left the Committee but did not give reasons.
He also confirmed that the governor made funds available to prosecute the funeral but said the first son of the deceased, Mr Joseph Wayas jr, should be in a better position to explain why the body of his late father had not been interred.
“He cannot say he does not have explanation to give about why the funeral is delayed. He is the first son. He should be in charge …”, Ugbo reacted when told that the son referred our reporter to the committee.
Wayas jr told Daily Trust that the funeral committee was saddled with the task of handling the funeral and that he had little to do.
He commended Ayade for the support he gave to the committee, but said 14 months after, they were unable to bury his father.
“The funeral is not exactly in our hands but that of the funeral committee. I heard there are issues surrounding the funeral funds. And some members are said to have resigned. I cannot go back to the state governor or federal government now due to election issues. The governor has done well already.”
In an earlier interview, Wayas jr regretted the delay in carrying out the burial of his father but appealed that the body given its last respect soon.
Wayas Jr thanked President Muhamudu Buhari, who had facilitated his father’s trip to London when he first took ill.
He said his father had access to the best medical care, but the resources he gave got exhausted within three months.
According to him, before the senior Wayas died, it was his sister in London who bore the cost of his treatment, and had been maintaining the corpse since 2021.
Commenting, permanent secretary in the state Ministry of Health, Dr Iwara Iwara, said, “As it is well known, the state governor empanelled a committee. As a person, I haven’t heard anything further. I cannot be able to give reasons why the burial is delayed.”
Chief media adviser to the governor, Barrister Christian Ita, said, “I don’t want to get involved in the matter. Perhaps the first son is the problem. But speak to members of the the funeral committee. The governor actually released money for the burial months ago.”

Pawpaw, also known as papaya, is a tropical fruit that is well-known for its many health benefits. One lesser-known benefit of pawpaw is that the seeds of the fruit contain compounds that can be beneficial for older men. Regular consumption of pawpaw seeds can help to improve prostate health, boost the immune system, and even prevent cancer.
According to webmd, One of the main reasons older men should chew pawpaw seeds regularly is that they contain high levels of enzymes that can help to improve prostate health. The prostate is a small gland located below the bladder in men that produces a fluid that is essential for sperm survival. As men age, the prostate can become enlarged, which can lead to a condition known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Symptoms of BPH include difficulty urinating, frequent urination, and a weak urine stream. Pawpaw seeds contain enzymes such as papain and chymopapain, which can help to reduce inflammation in the prostate and improve overall prostate health.
Pawpaw seeds also contain compounds that can boost the immune system. The seeds contain high levels of antioxidants, such as vitamin C and beta-carotene, which can help to protect the body from harmful free radicals. Free radicals are unstable molecules that can damage cells and contribute to the development of chronic diseases such as cancer. Antioxidants help to neutralize free radicals and protect the body from their harmful effects. Pawpaw seeds also contain other compounds such as flavonoids and carotenoids that have been shown to have immune-boosting properties.
Another benefit of pawpaw seeds is that they may help to prevent cancer. The seeds contain compounds such as lycopene and isothiocyanates, which have been shown to have anti-cancer properties. Lycopene is a carotenoid that is found in high concentrations in pawpaw seeds and has been shown to reduce the risk of prostate cancer. Isothiocyanates are compounds that are found in cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage. They have been shown to have anti-cancer properties and may help to prevent the development of cancer cells.
In addition to the health benefits outlined above, pawpaw seeds are also a good source of essential nutrients such as zinc, magnesium, and potassium. Zinc is important for maintaining a healthy immune system and is essential for the production of sperm. Magnesium is important for maintaining healthy bones and teeth and can also help to reduce stress and anxiety. Potassium is important for maintaining healthy blood pressure and can also help to reduce the risk of stroke.
In conclusion, pawpaw seeds are a great addition to the diet of older men. They contain enzymes that can help to improve prostate health, compounds that can boost the immune system, and may help to prevent cancer. They are also a good source of essential nutrients such as zinc, magnesium, and potassium. It is recommended to consume pawpaw seeds regularly and in small quantity to enjoy the benefits. However, as with any dietary supplement, it is always best to consult with a healthcare professional before starting to consume pawpaw seeds, especially if you are taking any medications or have any health conditions.
